************************************************************************ DDN MGT Bulletin 125 DISA DDN Defense Communications System 03 May 1993 Published by: DDN Network Info Center (NIC@NIC.DDN.MIL) (800) 365-3642 DEFENSE DATA NETWORK MANAGEMENT BULLETIN The DDN MANAGEMENT BULLETIN is distributed online by the DDN Network Information Center under DISA contract as a means of communicating official policy, procedures and other information of concern to management personnel at DDN facilities. Back issues may be read through the TACNEWS server ("@n" command at the TAC) or may be obtained by FTP (or Kermit) from the NIC.DDN.MIL host [192.112.36.5] using login="anonymous" and password="guest". The pathname for bulletins is ddn-news/ddn-mgt-bulletin-nn.txt (where "nn" is the bulletin number). ************************************************************************ SUBJECT: NEW DDN NODE SITE COORDINATOR TEMPLATE 1. On 30 April 19993 the DDN NIC will install a NEW DDN NODE SITE COORDINATOR Template under the file name: mil-nsc-template.txt. The template may be obtained from the NIC's anonymous FTP directory, "templates". Please read all instructions carefully and do not make any changes to the template itself! The NIC will begin accepting and processing templates in the new format on 1 May 1993. Data submitted on the old template will be accepted until 1 June 1993. Please address comments and questions to hostmaster@nic.ddn.mil. 2. This new format file will not allow HARDCOPY submission of the NSC template. This is an automated system, which when submitted provides the DDN NIC the capability to do automated updates and less manual intervention. 3. ALL DDN MILNET NODE SITE COORDINATORS, WHO HAVE NOT SUBMITTED AN UPDATED DDN NSC TEMPLATE AS OF 1 JANUARY 1993, ARE REQUESTED TO SUBMIT A NEW UPDATED NSC TEMPLATE BY 21 MAY 1993, IN THE NEW FORMAT LISTED BELOW. IF YOU INCURR PROBLEMS TRYING TO OBTAIN THIS NEW DDN NSC TEMPLATE, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR LOCAL HOST ADMINISTRATOR FOR ASSISTANCE, IF THE HOST ADMINISTRATOR CANNOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM, THEN HE/SHE SHOULD NOTIFY THE DDN NIC, 1-800-365-3642, FOR ASSISTANCE. 4. It is imperative, we have ACCURATE information at the DDN NIC and the MILNET Monitoring Centers, so we are able to contact DDN Node Site Coordinators' during periods of direct connected terminals, host computers, MILNET Interservice Switch Trunks (ISTs), Terminal Access Controllers (TACs) and Packet Switching Node (PSN) outages on the network. The DDN NSC Template is our primary means for obtaining this information, along with all DDN MILNET Users. Some of the DDN Node Site Coordinator Template information HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED SINCE THE 1989 TIMEFRAME, we can no longer have or support outdated records of this nature on DDN MILNET. 5. The Node Site Coordinator Template and Instructions follow: This is the new Node Site Coordinator template. Please read all instructions carefully and do not make any changes to the template itself! The NIC will begin accepting and processing templates in the new format after May 1, 1993. User data submitted on the old template will be accepted until June 1, 1993. Please address comments and questions to hostmaster@nic.ddn.mil. [ templates/mil-nsc-template.txt ] [Version NSC2.0 04/93 ] DO NOT ALTER THIS TEMPLATE IN ANY WAY It is set up in a format so that it can be processed by the NIC registration software. Any alteration will result in the template being returned for resubmission and will cause a corresponding delay in registration processing. THIS TEMPLATE CANNOT BE USED TO REGISTER MILNET PSNS AND TACS. THESE MUST BE REGISTERED VIA THE NETWORK CHANGE DIRECTIVE (NCD) PROCESS!! This template is used to update information about Node Site Coordinators (NSCs) for PSNs and TACs. (The fields marked with an asterisk [*] can only be changed with a MILNET NCD. The remaining fields--i.e, those NOT marked with an asterisk-- may be modified with this template.) This file presents instructions for submitting NSC updates and defines the acceptable formats for each entry. You may retrieve the file from the NIC via FTP. Simply log on with username "anonymous" and password "guest". Then change to the templates directory and request the file by executing a getfile procedure for filename nsc-template.txt at the prompt. The file contains five sections, as follows: A. General Instructions B. Instructions for Individual Field Entries C. Instructions for Submitting Registration Data D. Sample Template E. Blank Template (Use for Submission) Section A below provides general instructions for filling out the NSC templates. Acceptable formats and instructions for individual field entries follow in Section B. PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. A. General Instructions THE PSN/TAC HANDLE AND THE PSN/TAC NUMBER ARE REQUIRED ENTRIES FOR ALL USES OF THIS TEMPLATE 1. To ADD a Node Site Coordinator or Alternate to the database, fill out all required fields. Required fields are marked with a plus symbol (+). If the individual is already registered in the WHOIS database, then the NIC HANDLE FOR THE INDIVIDUAL IS REQUIRED. 2. To MODIFY or UPDATE an existing NSC record, enter the appropriate NIC handle(s) and include ONLY data for the fields that need to be changed. For the groups of fields, NSC3G through NSC3J, the entire group is processed together. A change to any one field within the group requires entries of all fields for the group. (ie. entry in any field causes all fields in the group to be updated from the template.) A keyword "NONE" may be entered in any non-required field to erase previous data. 3. The Node Site Coordinator may not be removed from the database without providing a replacement. To provide the replacement ADD the new Node Site Coordinator as discussed in instruction A.1. To REMOVE an alternate NSC, enter the word "NONE" in the appropriate alternate NSC's handle field. B. Instructions for Individual Field Entries 1. NODE INFORMATION + *NSC1A.
